Free Things to Do in Columbus (Including Live Comedy Every Wednesday)
Your bank account does not decide whether you have a good week. Columbus has a deep bench of free nights out; you just need to know where the locals actually go. Here is the shortlist, including one that gets you a full night of live comedy for exactly zero dollars.
1. A free comedy show every single Wednesday
Every Wednesday night, The Attic Comedy Club in Olde Towne East runs a comedy open mic that is completely free to watch. Comics sign up at 6:30 PM, the show starts at 7:00 PM, and you get a full night of stand-up in a real 90-seat club with a full bar. Some sets are polished, some are gloriously not, and that is the fun: you are watching comedians get built in real time. The same stage hosts national headliners on weekends, so Wednesday is the free preview of the room everyone pays for on Saturday.
2. Walk the Scioto Mile at golden hour
Downtown's riverfront path is the city's best free view: fountains, skyline, and enough distance to actually talk. Start near COSI, cross the bridges, and let the loop decide how long the night runs.
3. Topiary Park, the strangest garden in Ohio
A park where the shrubs recreate a famous French painting, a short walk from Olde Towne East. It costs nothing, it photographs like a dream, and you will spend twenty minutes saying wait, the boats are bushes too?
4. Mural hunting in the Short North
High Street is an open-air gallery: murals down the alleys, art in the windows, and people watching that qualifies as entertainment on its own. Time it with a Gallery Hop Saturday and whole galleries open their doors for free.
5. Get lost in The Book Loft
Thirty two rooms of books in a pre-Civil War building in German Village. Browsing is free, the maze is the attraction, and the brick streets outside are the prettiest free walk in the city afterward.
Pro tip: the Wednesday open mic at The Attic is free to watch and seats fill up. Come early, grab a drink, and sit anywhere but the front row unless you want to be part of someone's five minutes.
Make it a comedy night
